• Student Senate to attend youth summit about human trafficking awareness

Superintendent Rhonda Corr will join members of the DPS Student Senate at the Annual Ohio Human Trafficking Youth Summit at the Ohio Statehouse on Friday, Feb. 3. The summit brings together high school and college students from around the state to share ideas and learn about the topic. The event is hosted by State Rep. Teresa Fedor. The DPS Student Senate is comprised of selected student leaders from each of the six DPS high schools. Members meet with district leaders regularly during the school year. • Student artwork onboard the Dream Rocket

Several DPS students were selected to display their artwork as part of the International Fiber Collaborative Dream Rocket Project. The students were asked to create works about the Wright Brothers or Paul Laurence Dunbar. Ten pieces from Fairview PreK-6, Cleveland PreK-6, and Wright Brothers Middle School were selected and will be on display Feb. 3-Apr. 2, at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park’s Paul Laurence Dunbar House, 219 N. Paul Laurence Dunbar St. The art will then become part of an international Dream Rocket Project to wrap a 385-foot space launcher replica that will then travel the country for display. • WDPS-FM staff finalists for Golden Microphone Awards                         

Students and staff of WDPS-FM have been named finalists in seven categories of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s Golden Microphone Awards. The nominations are in the following categories: promotional series, station promo, on-air giveaway, show promo, underwriting spot, commercial spot, and public service announcement. The winners will be announced at the IBS 77^th Annual International Conference, March 3-5, in New York City. For more information, contact Joanne Viskup at 542-7227.

• Ponitz student chosen for Yeck Scholarship program

Ponitz Career Technology Center 11th-grader, Ania Gibson, has been accepted into the 2017 Yeck Scholarship Program at the Dayton Art Institute. She is one of only a dozen students chosen from across the area during a competitive portfolio process. She will participate in nine college-level studio art classes at the museum, once a week through March. The classes are taught by college students chosen for the Yeck College Artist Fellowship. “She worked really hard to earn this and I am extremely proud of her,” said Nicole Ely, Ania’s visual arts instructor. • Dunbar vocal students excel at state music festival

Students from the Dunbar Early College High School Vocal Music Program excelled in their performances at the Ohio Music Educators Association District XII Solo and Ensemble Festival on Jan. 28. Senior Alexis Garnett received a superior rating for her performance of an Italian aria entitled “Alma Del Core.” The Dunbar Concert Choir received a superior rating for their performance of Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus.” The choir consists of 24 students and is under the direction of Justen Seay.
