Six students in the Dayton Public Schools awarded scholarships

Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Luncheon

One graduating senior from each of the Dayton Public high schools received a $1,000 scholarship provided by the Montgomery County Educational Service Center (MCESC) at the Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Luncheon.

The Franklin B. Walter Scholarship is named in honor of the longtime State Superintendent, who served between 1977 and 1991. 

Twenty-one scholarships were presented Tuesday, April 9 at the Marriott at the University of Dayton to one senior from each of the area’s high schools. 

Students were nominated by their school districts. Awards, activities, attendance, and GPA were just a few of the nomination criteria. Student essays on a teacher who has influenced his or her life and academic career were also taken into consideration. 

Those teachers of influence received $500 from the MCESC, which can be used for instructional materials or classrooms.

Belmont High School:
Danielle Hammond
Master Sergeant Oliver (teacher of influence) 

Dunbar Early College High School:
Ty’Lynne Bradley
Mr. James Lacking (teacher of influence)

David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center:
V’Shonne Allen
Mr. Kevin Kuehner (teacher of influence)

Meadowdale High School:
Rodney Rappley
Mr. James Bornhorst (teacher of influence)

Stivers School for the Arts:
Miannah Lawrence
Ms. Lizabeth Whipps (teacher of influence)

Thurgood Marshall STEM High School:
Daisha Williams
Ms. Nicole Gunder (teacher of influence)
