Students, driver suffer minor injuries; other driver hospitalized

     Thirty-two students onboard a school bus traveling to Kiser PreK-6 School were involved in a crash Monday, May 15, 2017. Nine students were removed to Dayton Children’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while the bus driver was removed to Miami Valley Hospital. The remaining children were put onboard another bus and transported to school.
    Superintendent Rhonda A. Corr visited the children and their families shortly after the crash. The children all appeared to be in good spirits and received the best of care by hospital staff. Supt. Corr also visited the bus driver, who was shaken, but was not seriously hurt.
     “We are so happy that the children and the bus driver will be okay. They are going to be sore for a while, but their health and safety is always a top priority,” Superintendent Corr said. “Our thoughts are also with the driver of the car that struck our bus.”
     Dayton Public Schools’ transportation department supervisors, along with DPS safety and security, immediately responded to the scene in the 2000 block of Troy St. around 8:15 a.m. The initial investigation indicates the car rear-ended the school bus at a stop sign.
     Dayton school bus drivers are fully trained about procedures following a crash. The driver immediately called her supervisors, and although injured, was able to check on the children’s welfare and report the need for medical assistance.
     The driver is a two-year employee of Dayton Public Schools, and has a clear driving record. All DPS drivers must be state-certified, and are required to master a strict district training program about bus operations, pre- and-post route checks, and accident procedures.
