A new Lunch and Learn program for high school students in Dayton Public Schools launched Tuesday.

The program is designed to make students college and career ready by introducing them to area professionals who share expertise and advice.

Tuesday’s Lunch and Learn was filmed at David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center. Students at all DPS high schools will have the opportunity to watch the program.

Based on input from DPS juniors and seniors, Tuesday’s topic focused on careers in health care. Allied health, biotechnology and dental students attended and brought questions to the Media Center, where the event was held.

A panel of speakers encouraged students to job shadow, volunteer and continue their education. In the frank and sometimes funny discussion, speakers shared the highs and lows of their careers, and how their jobs are not always the way television portrays them.

Speakers included Rena Shuchat, Ed.D., Dean of Health Sciences at Sinclair Community College; Bukari Miles, a senior human resources consultant at Premier Health; Amanda Via, BSN and CareFlight at Miami Valley Hospital; Hope Williamson, a respiratory therapy student at Sinclair; and Shannon Deye, a firefighter/paramedic and Sinclair graduate.

“We get to do a lot of neat things,” Via told the students. “We want to inspire you to go and do what you’re passionate about, because at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”

Topics of conversation included certificate and degree programs at Sinclair, current job openings with Premier Health and specific skills students must have to be effective in health care careers.
